Float Therapy in Michigan: Your First Float, Honestly Explained
Float & Sauna · 6 min read ·
Float therapy sounds strange until you have done it once. You lie back in warm, heavily salted water in a quiet, dark tank, and your body stops working against gravity. That is the whole mechanism. What happens next is the interesting part.
How a float session works
The water is dense with magnesium rich salt and held near skin temperature, so within a few minutes you lose track of where the water ends and you begin. There is nothing to hold, nothing to look at and nothing to listen to. With that much sensory input removed, the nervous system has very little left to defend against.
Our Float and Restore session is $75 for 60 minutes or $100 for 90 minutes. Ninety is the better choice if you already know you are a slow settler.
What the first twenty minutes feel like
Busy. Almost everyone reports the same arc. The first stretch is your brain filing paperwork, replaying conversations and checking whether it is doing this right. You are. Around the twenty minute mark the internal narration thins out and the session changes character entirely.
The instruction is simple. Do nothing, badly, for an hour.
How to prepare
- Skip caffeine for a few hours beforehand if you can.
- Eat something light. Neither full nor starving floats well.
- Do not shave the same day. Salt water and fresh nicks disagree.
- Shower before and after. The rinse afterward is part of the experience.
- Contact lenses come out before you get in.
What to pair it with
Float first, then bodywork, is our most requested sequence. Muscles are already softened and warm, so a Signature Relaxation or Deep Renewal session goes further. The private cedar sauna, $100 for the hour and yours for up to eight people, is the other natural pairing, especially in a Michigan winter.
Who should wait
If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery, managing a skin condition or navigating serious claustrophobia, talk to us first at 616-405-5423. Sometimes the answer is a shorter session with the tank lid open. Sometimes the honest answer is a sound bed session instead, and we will tell you so.
